The Republic of Dagestan is the southernmost region of the Russian Federation, located in the North Caucasus and bordering the Caspian Sea. The republic's name derives from the Turkic word "dag" (mountain) and the Iranian suffix "-stan" (country, place of settlement), literally meaning "Country of Mountains. Dagestan is renowned for its unique cultural and ethnic diversity.
