Zanskar (or Zangskar) is a high-mountain semi-desert region in the Indian union district of Ladakh. It is located in the northern part of the Himalayas and is known for its harsh but picturesque landscapes, ancient Buddhist monasteries and unique Tibetan culture. Access to Zanskar is difficult due to the complex mountain terrain. The majority of the population are Zanskars of Tibetan origin who practice Tibetan Buddhism. The region has preserved its rich cultural heritage due to its isolation. There are several ancient and significant Buddhist monasteries (gompa) in Zanskar, such as Phugtal Monastery, Karsha Monastery, Stongde Monastery and Sani Monastery.
