Gurkha District is a historic region in central Nepal, part of the Gandaki Province. As of 2025, it remains the fourth largest of Nepal’s 77 districts by area, covering 3,610 square kms. Gurkha district is known as the birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, who unified the fragmented kingdoms into modern Nepal in the 18th century. The district is the ancestral homeland of the legendary Gurkha soldiers, world-renowned for their bravery in the British, Indian, and Nepali armies. Mount Manaslu (the 8th highest mountain in the world (8,163m)) is located within the district, making it a major hub for high-altitude trekking.
